“HYDROZOA” an artPLAY exclusive fashion story

TRICKI is a professional dancer, performer and all around talented, sexy and creative genderfluid artist. He has teamed up with his partner Max who is a fashion designer and with Paris photographer Katja Kat, to create a genderfluid, alien fashion story; using selected pieces from such amazing fashion designers as Erik Halley and Jivomir Domoustchiev. The mood is that of creative fairytale embracing all sides of the gender spectrum and mixing fashion and science fiction.
We had a chat with Tricki about genderfluidity, artistic expression and his inspirations. Read the full interview below.

This is what Tricki had to say exclusively to artPLAY:

Originally from the UK, I remember as if it was yesterday, arriving into Paris unable to speak French, it was then when I first met, at the famous party “Room Service”, the living work of art, genderfluid artist Daniel Lismore. That day we first met he changed something within me that I will forever be thankful for.

I was raised with images of androgynous pop stars such as David Bowie, Annie Lenox, Grace Jones, Freddy Mercury, Boy George and the list goes on, so I always mixed gender clothing. But the pressure to conform to people’s expectations did make me second guess myself and what I was trying to express, even now I still have these questions and judgments.

Although we are moving forward allowing people to express their sexuality, artistic sense and gender fluidity there are still boundaries and boxes people want to push you into to make it easier for them to understand. I have come the realization over time that is not a reflection of me but of those who view me.

Luckily for me, some people did understand what I was trying to achieve. Designers such as Erik Halley have always supported me as a performer and personally and over the years I’ve worn many of his creations and so it was important for me to include his work in this shoot with artPLAY.

My partner in both my personal and professional life, is also my costume designer, we design and create most of my stage costumes together. For us, it is important to over-accentuate both male and female stereotypes such as small waist but wide shoulders, we create the garments to keep both qualities and I feel this is what creates the “sex appeal” that people find within my looks. Our goal is to always blend the genders together, for people to look at me, either they are male or female, gay or straight and connect via an attraction, that they might not be able to explain.

We are trying to open the eyes of the viewer so they are able to see it doesn’t matter which gender we are assigned at birth but having the confidence to experiment across the feminine and masculine spectrums is the most attractive thing of all. They will be drawn to certain characteristics and quality’s they find attractive.

Something as simple as the fact I keep my facial hair which is seen as masculine but wear Chanel no5 (a smell strongly associated to females such as Marilyn Monroe) helps me to play with the people’s senses… to lock in memories and to create almost a sexual fantasy robot that can cover all desires and spectrums of gender they may have.

My performances have become increasingly personal, using how I feel in my relationship, my memories and inspirations, mixed with pop culture references and fantasy. For me it’s telling stories of love, pain, desire and sex. If one person who is watching can connect to a feeling or a emotion they too, have experienced and inspire them to express themselves, to throw on some lipstick with a pair football socks and smile and think fuck it this is me, gives me the motivation to push further.

My motto is hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard enough and I will keep working hard not only for myself, but for all those who have to be told that they don’t fit in.

Who wants to fucking ” fit in ” anyway?
