SKINFINITE by Tom Brut featuring Chronomatic Latex shot in Berlin showcasing a powerful yet fragile female energy, revealed in three colours: black, white and red for strength, purity and passion. This is what the team had to say to artPLAY:

Latex is still a provocative and controversial material in today’s society. On the one hand it reminds us of a distant future, it occurs in many dystopias, in the music industry and fantasy films. On the other hand we don’t want to have a video chat with our parents while we are wearing a latex outfit. Is it the fear of being sexualized or rather because we perceive the material as sexual from the outset?
Latex offers a contrast that could hardly be greater in terms of materiality. The smell alone dominates over other materials, but at the same time it is sensitive, fragile and very high quality. Latex is strict and at the same time supple. It’s like slipping into a strange and yet very suitable skin or protective cover. At the same time, the material lets you guess every little detail of your own body shape.

I still remember, when I was very young, the moment I tried to slip into my first latex overknee socks on my own. I was sitting on the kitchen floor of my apartment. Without knowing what I was actually doing, after half an hour of torture, I called my best friend for help. How I could slip into this mysterious piece of clothing? Her explanation was as simple as it was useless for me: “You put them on like normal socks”.
Today I know that back then I didn’t have the talc or a massive amount of silicone oil that I needed. I’ve known better for years now. At that time it only took 30 minutes longer and the sweat finally made it possible to get dressed. Now and then I still smile about my clumsiness back then.

Many years later, the current glove collection as part of the accessories collection called “The Art of Seduction” from the Berlin label Chronomatic Latex presented me with a new challenge.
A label known for its timeless and direct design, pure and unobtrusive, with a love for detail, the designer Carina Pflueger develops sustainable collections. Sustainable as they’re not subject to any trend. Despite the thoughtful color selection of her collections, the designer remains predominantly monochrome and pays attention to designing combinable pieces, with the potential of becoming firm favourites rather than being forgotten at the back of the wardrobe.
New questions arose: “How do you get into a long latex glove? And how do you put on the second one when you are full of silicone oil? ”.

When I first thought about this series, it was clear from the start that only one photographer could be considered: Tom Brut.
Through his interest in the grey area between beauty and the extreme, he repeatedly creates a challenge for the viewers eyes. His graphic standards dictate the structure of his photographs.
The latex designs caught Tom Brut’s interest as they presented him with new challenges. The material required photographic rethinking on all levels in order to be able to present it in a tangible, structural and clear manner. His own claim was to provoke a mixture of sensory impressions by looking at it. The eye should be able to feel, smell and taste the material.
Exactly this claim created the title, which allows a lot of room for interpretation.
For the collaborative team, ‘Skinfinite’ describes the perceived infinity and intensification of feeling one’s own skin through latex, the erupting blend of sensory impressions, the ambivalence of full clothing and the extreme emphasis on the body at the same time.

The central theme of this series was strengthening femininity and encouraging individual expression. The project required a strong personality as a model for this. Das Fraeulein Fuchs is a Berlin based muse, known for her boundary breaking and chameleon-like essence. Many years of multidisciplinary work and experience provided the right base for giving this series her face.
During the collaboration everyone expanded their knowledge. They learned how to put on various latex gloves, the trouble lily dust can cause, how challenging reflective objects can be, how to avoid frog fingers and what a straw has to do with this.
