artPLAY SHIBARI ART
artPLAY magazine- spiritual, kinky and genderfluid culture
Shibari, also referred to as Kinbaku, is a highly evolved Japanese bondage technique that in recent years has moved away from the traditional Japanese fetish circles into more artistic areas of performance, photography, art, and fashion. Shibari has become very popular among artists not only in Japan, but all over the world.
Shibari art has many sides, angles, and depths. The obvious is the fetishistic bondage side, where it is used as a means of restraint in role play. It has an athletic side, as intensive training and build up of pain tolerance are required in order to practice Shibari. There is an erotic, sexual, sensual, and tender aspect to Shibari, as close interaction and trust between two individuals is central to the practice. It has a performance side, having lately become a popular spectacle, showcased in clubs in New York, London and other cities. Shibari’s striking aesthetic and artistic aspect has lead to its use in installations, as a means of creating live sculptures for galleries, art displays, and art magazines. The fashion side of Shibari has developed in recent years, with famous designers and fashion magazines incorporating aspects of Shibari into their styling, accessories, and garments.
As a practice, Shibari challenges the mind and the body. It is a very physical practice, where you push your body to its limits, but it is also a spiritual practice where you challenge your fears and emotions and let go. Shibari can be an expression of whatever you want it to be: artistic, sexual, dirty, clean, intellectual, spiritual, pornographic, sportive, meditative, relaxed or intense…….
Let us take you on a Shibari journey and you might fall in love with Shibari art forms just as we did.
